The beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO is a class leading, open-back headphone designed for professional studio use, but is equality talented at home.
The DT 1990 is the open-back version of the DT 1770 PRO and means business when it comes to high end open back audio. As mentioned by techradar, they are "the headphone Darth Vader would rock out with".
This model has a split personally as it comes with two different ear pads which change the audible experience. By changing the ear pads you get either a well-balanced sound (more adpt for home listening) vs a more analytical sound, more suited for mixing, mastering and critical listening.
That aside, it's safe to say that the 1990 have very rich highs, detailed mids and precise bass. Thanks to the open back design, they execute a massive sound stage which provides a very natual spatial sound.
The headphones are high precision and high power output. At 250 ohm, they will require quite a good/ powerful amp to drive. Portable devices will sound reasonable, but the headphones will really shine if paired with a good hi-fi/ headphone amp.
Meticulously hand made in Germany, Beyerdynamic are very well known for their supreme craftsmanship. Just look at the images above to get a flavour of this.
As mentioned the headphones come with two sets of ear pads depending listening style and a 3m straight and coiled cable. The DT 1990 also comes with a hard case which allows you to transport from studio to home if needs be.
The yoke is made from aluminium and general build quality will last for a lifetime if taken care of. The cable is also detachable/ replaceable in the event of an accident.
Over the many years Beyerdynamic have mastered the art of ear pad technology. The memory foam + textiles technology proves to be highly durable and comfortable, that's why they are often the headphone of choice for heavy and long sessions in recording studios around the world.

Please note that professional reviews for headphones are much more varied than traditional Hi-Fi. With Bookshelf Speakers and the likes, it's quite often to get 5 stars straight across the board. With Headphones, it's very rare that everyone agrees on the quality of the product, therefore straight 5 star reviews are very rare. Critically acclaimed headphones will generally average around 4 stars regardless of performance, so don't be put off by this.
That being said, we always prefer to show each review where possible, even if the review isn't so flattering. It is after all a very subjective opinion as everyone has different hearing abilities and preferred styles. Think of it like wine, you can buy a £100 bottle, but prefer a £6. At the end of the day it's down to taste and taste alone.
Let us know if you find any good professional reviews and we will add them to the site!
The Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro feature stunning resolution, soundstage and build quality. Its sparkling highs, tight bass and detail retrieval make it great value for money for those looking for audiophile headphones that sound great with all types of music.
The Beyerdynamic test should offer more answers, then, but first up, let’s look at the 1990s in isolation. They are very comfortable, probably right up there in the top levels of headphone comfort that we’ve experienced.
The sound is glorious; uncoloured and spacious, as you’d expect from open-backed ’phones (their main advantage over closed headphones).Read full review
