The DT 880 is highly praised as one of the key over-ear headphones in the beyerdynamic arsenal.
The DT 880 Premium shares exactly the same audible experience as the DT 880 PRO, however the build is aimed at the hi-fi listener. For example the headband is more comfortable, they put less pressure on the head and have a straight cable in comparison to the PRO which has a coiled cable. Regardless of the variants, the DT 880 series is quite ground breaking as a whole.
The DT 880 have super soft velour ear pads which are quite possibly the most comfortable headphones in the world. They truly are a pleasure to wear. It's almost as if it's more comfortable wearing them, than not. The velour is designed to be soft, but not to insulate the ear so much that it causes heat build up.
Ear pads aside, they also have a premium aluminium yoke, soft headband and a design which really stands the test of time. These headphones really can be listen to for hours on end. You almost miss them when taken off.
Another bonus about the DT 880 is that all the parts are replaceable. This really makes the DT 880 a headphone for a lifetime.
Needless to say, this product is manufactured in Germany, therefore high standards are mandatory.
Beyer has been around since the dawn of time. Throughout this time, they have never sat still and have always produced one excellent product after another. The DT 880 is no expectation.
Some people may say some beyerdynamic products sound a little extreme when it comes to the reproduction of high frequencies. We would say the 880 is toned down a touch to provide a crisp yet pleasing sound, with longevity in mind. That being said, don't think these are dull in the slightest. They produce deep, impactful bass that resonates beyond imagination, however, they always manage to keep refined and never stray into the overstated.
Mid and highs are spacious and vibrant portraying the true sole of the music. Often people say they favour to jazz and other acoustic music due to their open, almost life-like characteristics.
The design is semi open. This means they isolate some of the noise coming in/ going out. The result is still very spacious (like an open-back headphone) however they still provide some dampening to ensure you don't bother others. This should be fine for offices and semi quite spaces.
Overall the DT 880 provides a very natural sound which keeps you coming back for more.
As with many beyerdynamic headphones, the DT 880 comes in three variants of ohms (32, 250 and 600). Without going into too much detail, please see the list below for details:

|Impedance||32 / 250 / 600 ohms depending on variant|
|Cable||3m straight cable|
|Connector||Gold-plated 1/8" mini stereo jack plug (3.5 mm) and 1/4" adapter (6.35 mm)|

Please note that professional reviews for headphones are much more varied than traditional Hi-Fi. With Bookshelf Speakers and the likes, it's quite often to get 5 stars straight across the board. With Headphones, it's very rare that everyone agrees on the quality of the product, therefore straight 5 star reviews are very rare. Critically acclaimed headphones will generally average around 4 stars regardless of performance, so don't be put off by this.
That being said, we always prefer to show each review where possible, even if the review isn't so flattering. It is after all a very subjective opinion as everyone has different hearing abilities and preferred styles. Think of it like wine, you can buy a £100 bottle, but prefer a £6. At the end of the day it's down to taste and taste alone.
Let us know if you find any good professional reviews and we will add them to the site!
Soft cushion comfort with the perfect grip, plus a sound that has impressive all-round ability.
The Beyerdynamic DT 880s are extra comforatable and their sound is certainly audiophile level, but stereo imaging isn't as wide open as other top contenders.
The Beyerdynamic DT 880 headphones are among the most comfortable on the market, and they come packaged in a gorgeous padded aluminum storage case. The headphones use a standard miniplug connector but include a 1/4-inch adapter and a 15-foot extension cord.
The DT 880s are expensive, and ill suited for use with the iPod.
Like a pair of velvet slippers for your ears. These are some of the comfiest cans I’ve ever put on my head. Zero ear fatigue even after epic listening sessions. Classic design cues and quality materials make for one gorgeous, yet tough, headphone. Detailed soundstage with tight, controlled bass. 32-ohm version is easy to drive and great for your iPod or laptop. Padded carrying case included.
Just as big and bulky as your dad’s old cans — not the most travel-friendly option. Semi-open design means some sonic leakage, so anyone sitting next to you will be listening to your music, too. Treble can be a bit harsh at times.
