audio-technica ATH-AD700X Description

The AD700X is superb Open-Back, Over-Ear headphone which is driven by a juggernaut 53mm driver.

The 700X is well known for driving wide frequency ranges as well as producing sweet and delicate mid / highs. This is all driven through the Open-Back design which results in a very spacious and immersive experience, whilst still being connected to your surroundings.

Living with a 53mm 700X Open-Back Headphone

Needless to say, these headphones are designed for your living room, unless you have no disregard for your colleagues at work (which grants maximum respect) as these headphones really breath the sound. The downside to this being the leakage of sound, however the significant upside is the superior Open-Back experience. This produces a much more natural sound as the music blends with subtle background sounds, providing a more 'traditional hi-fi experience'.

The 53mm drivers are supported by audio-technica's bobbin-wound CCAW voice coils, which give the headphones the power they need to produce the wide range of audio frequencies that audiophiles love. They also utilise the D.A.D.S (Double Air Damping System) developed by audio-technica which channels the air to flow in such a way that it expands the frequency range. According to the stats, the AD700X stretches all the way from 5 to 30,000hz. Given that the human hearing is ~20 - 20,000 this is quite impressive. It's hard to hit these frequencies in smaller cans, so sometimes size does matter!

Couple this with the Open-Back design, and you have a headphone which can not only kick out the lower frequencies, but can also delicately flow across the frequency ranges with minimum distortion. This gives the headphones the feeling of being very spacious and dynamic.

If you haven't listen to headphones with this wider frequency range before, then you will be sure to notice new elements of tunes you haven't heard before.

Comfort & Build Quality

Comfort & Build Quality

Let's start of by saying that the headphones are made of a number of fine materials, two of which are Aluminium and Magnesium. This not only works well in terms of acoustics and strength, but it also greatly reduces the weight of the headphones as a whole. Given the size of these beasts, they only weigh 265 grams. This isn't a considerable amount given the amount of support you receive from the headband / ear pads.

The ear pads are made from memory foam, allowing them to sculpt and fit each users head. They are finished with soft velvet which almost feels more comfortable on than off.

The overall design is known as '3D Wing Shaped'. This enables the headphones to stretch and manoeuvre so the headphones can fit even the largest of heads. Also given that the headphones are quite large, it means that even large ears can fit quite comfortably.

The headphone also come with a rather nice OFC, single-sided cord with a elastic TPE sheath to prevent tangles if they should occur.

audio-technica ATH-AD700X Professional Reviews

Please note that professional reviews for headphones are much more varied than traditional Hi-Fi. With Bookshelf Speakers and the likes, it's quite often to get 5 stars straight across the board. With Headphones, it's very rare that everyone agrees on the quality of the product, therefore straight 5 star reviews are very rare. Critically acclaimed headphones will generally average around 4 stars regardless of performance, so don't be put off by this.

That being said, we always prefer to show each review where possible, even if the review isn't so flattering. It is after all a very subjective opinion as everyone has different hearing abilities and preferred styles. Think of it like wine, you can buy a £100 bottle, but prefer a £6. At the end of the day it's down to taste and taste alone.

Let us know if you find any good professional reviews and we will add them to the site!
